Do I need an EORI number to trade with the UK post Brexit?

EU trading number

Marie Brennan ACCA, 20th February 2019

The United Kingdom (UK) is set to leave the European Union (EU) on the 29th of March 2019. As such, there are some important implications that businesses will need to consider in the likely event of a no-deal Brexit. If an Irish company intends to continue trading with the UK after Brexit, the non-European Union trade rules will likely apply.

What is an EORI Number?

An Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number is a registration and identification number that EU based businesses will need in order to import or export of goods in or out of the EU. Companies based in the United Kingdom will require a UK EORI number to continue trading with the EU post-Brexit. It is required for dealing with customs when importing or exporting outside of the EU. All goods must be classified for customs purposes when importing or exporting into or out of the EU and the assigned classification code will determine the Customs Duty to be paid on imported products.

Who needs an EORI Number?

Irish companies and other EU companies that trade goods with the UK should take steps to prepare for Brexit by obtaining an EORI number as it will be required when importing or exporting goods outside of the EU.

UK companies that import or export goods with the EU will need a UK EORI number that begins with GB to continue trading in and out of the EU after Brexit.

Please note: An EORI number is not required to trade goods across the Republic of Ireland – Northern Ireland land border.

Importing goods from outside of the EU

When importing goods from a non-EU country the goods will require an import declaration and will be subject to customs control, this may result in VAT or customs duties.

Exporting goods outside of the EU

When exporting goods to a non-EU country the goods will require an export declaration and will be subject to customs control.

EORI numbers are assigned by the revenue commissioner and may be aligned with a company’s existing VAT number. Company Bureau can assist your company to obtain an EORI number within 2-3 business days. Please contact us for more information or to proceed with an application.
